Description

XXX Machina: Polaroids is a series of AI-generated erotic imagery on Polaroid film by artist Erin Robinson, Author of XXX Machina (Merit of Distinction Ars Electronica 2025).

Utilising the Polaroid’s status as a proto-networked form of pornography to explore synthetic desire, each image is a deepfake of the artist, derived from an archive of pornographic Polaroids and printed onto the same instant film that once served as the first infrastructure of domestic erotic exchange. Its labless immediacy made it a discreet technology of intimacy, allowing photographs to be produced, possessed, and circulated without institutional oversight.

Set within the longer economy of images, the series links two methods of image circulation: the analogue traffic of Polaroids passed privately, and the networked traffic of files that propagate through algorithmic feeds. Each print occupies this threshold, tracing how images gain and lose credibility as they move through different systems of exchange, asking what kind of truth can still be attached to a physical photograph once its content is generated by a machine, and how the movement of erotic images. from private circulation to algorithmic reproduction, reshape the way desire is produced and shared. The work treats reality as a function of transit through media by translating the immaterial logic of the algorithm into a tactile surface.
